India, October 20: Every year, on 16th October, people from around the world come together on World Spine Day to raise awareness about spinal disorders and empower others to take charge of their spinal health. With an estimated one billion people worldwide suffering from back pain, it affects all age groups, from children to the elderly. It is the biggest single cause of disability on the planet, with 1 to 5% of adults estimated to suffer from back pain during their lives.

“Increase in sedentary lifestyle is having a profound negative impact on our health and especially our spines. Back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders are on the rise, and Indians of all ages are suffering. The good news is that it is possible to prevent such spinal health issues without the need for drastic measures. Regular physical activity, good posture, lifting safely, healthy working conditions, and lifestyle adjustments can improve spinal health and overall well-being. One should be mindful of posture throughout the day and try to correct it as soon as possible when you find yourself slipping into awkward positions especially stop looking down at devices. Instead, hold or set your phone at eye level and when you’re at your PC, position your screen high enough so you can look straight out at it rather than down. Your spine should be in one straight line from the top of your head to your tailbone,” Says Vijay Dhawangale while addressing a virtual conference for the members of the International Plasma Forum on the eve of World Spine Day 2022.

According to Global Healthcare Advisor Vijay Dhawangale, Good posture plays an integral role in optimal spinal health, as it allows the spine to be correctly aligned and reduces the amount of strain on the body. “As a child is growing, bad posture can lead to abnormal positioning, abnormal growth of the spine and, ultimately, increased arthritis later in life,” adds Vijay while explaining about developing good posture as your child grows and the long-term benefits that will pay off throughout their lifetime. You might remember during your childhood or at school, your parents or teachers telling you to sit up straight or stand tall. The way we have been sitting, standing, and sleeping throughout our entire lives is a big part of how many of us continue to carry ourselves. For many people, poor posture has been habituated over time, and it is often now contributing to neck and/or back pain. Studies conducted overseas indicate that 90% of people who adopted the exercises as part of their daily routine reported a postural improvement. Approximately 80% reported that their backs are more comfortable and that they have better core stability after practising the activities for several weeks.

The spine is a part of the central nervous system extending from your neck up to your buttocks. Any abnormality in the spine tends to put pressure on the nerves resulting in back pain. Being an essential structure supporting the skeletal system and being a part of the nervous system can affect almost the entire body. Unfortunately, there’s no way to reverse damage to the spinal cord. Therefore, prevention is the key to good spinal health, explains Vijay Dhawangale.
